We are conditioned by our environment to expect instant gratification and this is why we struggle with building healthy habits. Before we dive into building habits, the first step is to identify your “Big Why.” Why do you want to build these habits? Your “Big Why” will serve as your motivation and deterrent from giving up when life gets tough. Once we understand our “Big Why”, we can begin building healthy habits. There are three parts to a habit: cue, routine, and reward. When we understand these three components, we can begin building new habits and breaking old ones. The brain wants to fix pain and chase the pleasure of the cue and whichever way we choose to respond will become the habit when it’s done enough times.
