Befriending and Providing Support
The Silver Line Helpline is a crucial aspect of our comprehensive support services for elderly individuals experiencing loneliness and isolation. On a national level, the Age UK Telephone Friendship Service offers valuable support to nearly 5,000 older people each week through regular telephone calls, serving as a lifeline to those who are in dire need of social contact.
Additionally, on a local level, many of our partners administer in-person befriending services, where thousands of older people receive visits from trained, compassionate individuals who provide friendship and encouragement.
At the core of all these services are dedicated volunteers. These volunteers generously give their time and provide a sympathetic ear, empathy, and uplifting words, along with some good humor and cheer.
We are incredibly grateful for our befriending volunteers, but there is a pressing need for more. Next year, we will be launching a major campaign to recruit additional volunteers.
In the meantime, we ask for your support of our Christmas Appeal this year, which will enable us to continue being there for older people on their hardest days, and every day, by offering friendship and support.
Lastly, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dame Esther for her role in bringing The Silver Line to the lives of so many older individuals.
