Three-time Oscar-winning film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, 84, is best known for her collaboration with Martin Scorsese over five decades. However, her favorite filmmaker is Michael Powell, whom she also married. Together, they spent the last ten years of his life, forming a deep connection. Today, Schoonmaker, Scorsese, and director David Hinton have shed light on Powell’s iconic films in a documentary titled Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger. In an interview, Schoonmaker reflects on her extraordinary life, sharing stories about her first meeting with Scorsese, discovering Powell’s films, and her unique editing process. Despite her long and successful career, retirement is not an option for Schoonmaker, who continues to work tirelessly on film projects. With a keen interest in preserving Powell’s legacy, she hopes audiences will rediscover and appreciate his timeless films. Photo courtesy of Cohen Media Group.
