Paulina Porizkova is preparing to take a break from her high-flying lifestyle and undergo double hip replacement surgery. The supermodel and advocate against ageism shared on Instagram today that the procedure is “long overdue.” Porizkova revealed that she was born with congenital hip dysplasia, a condition where her hip sockets don’t fully cover the ball portion of her upper thighbones. Most people with hip dysplasia are born with the condition, and if not corrected in early infancy, it can cause damage to the soft cartilage along the rim of the hip socket. In Porizkova’s case, the cartilage in her hips is “worn out,” with “none left”. The doctors have recommended hip replacement surgery due to the severity of the damage caused by her hip joints being basically “bone on bone”. Porizkova has decided to go on one last vacation with her “old hips” before getting the surgery. Mayo Clinic notes that hip replacement is an option for older hip dysplasia patients with “severe” damage often resulting in “debilitating arthritis.” She found a doctor she trusts who specializes in anterior hip replacements. While she is anxious for the surgery, Porizkova is trying to look at it as an opportunity for self-care.
