It is Never Too Late to Improve Health by Reducing Calorie Intake

Life lived on a high calorie diet is shorter and less healthy than a life on a lower calorie diet, as long as necessary nutrients are still obtained. Human trials show that even modest calorie restriction can improve long term health. Research on flies has demonstrated the benefits of calorie restriction, showing that it is never too late to try a lower intake of calories to improve health.

Many studies have shown that calorie restriction without malnutrition can lengthen lifespan. In a study on flies, researchers found that switching to a low calorie diet extended lifespan, even for old flies in ill health. This suggests that humans may also benefit from reducing calorie intake at old age.
