Sheri Jones, 58, has served as a Poll Inspector since 2015. With the upcoming election season, we had the opportunity to chat with Sheri, who recently completed the intensive 10-week Beyond the Basics course at our Center in North Country. She shared insights on the advantages and technological skills required for a Poll Inspector role, and why seniors should consider applying for these paid positions.
What motivates you to work as a Poll Inspector for the Board of Elections?
When I first joined, I appreciated that it provided a job opportunity that accommodated my dialysis treatments while waiting for a kidney transplant. The seasonal nature, flexibility, and lack of physical strain made it an ideal fit. Furthermore, I genuinely enjoy engaging with people and learning about my community and the democratic process. It’s a rewarding experience to interact with diverse individuals and continually expand my knowledge.
What are some of the challenges you face in this role?
Election Day can be demanding, starting from the early setup at 5am to overseeing the polls until 9pm and then participating in the clean-up. Despite the long hours, there are options for shorter shifts if needed.
Ensuring a smooth election process would be impossible without the dedication of Poll Inspectors like Sheri!
What technological skills do you find beneficial for a Poll Inspector role?
While the Board of Elections provides annual training on necessary technologies and offers on-site manuals, having prior computer and email proficiency can be advantageous. I transitioned from paper booklets to utilizing iPads, a new experience that I embraced through on-the-job learning opportunities. Early Voting initiatives also allow for practice sessions prior to Election Day.
Being a Poll Inspector is a crucial role in the democratic process, and the support of dedicated individuals like Sheri is vital. To learn more, I encourage contacting your local Board of Elections. (You can find your local Board of Elections here!)
What does Aging with Attitude mean to you?
Embracing the aging process with a positive outlook is essential for me. Aging gracefully involves staying active and socially connected, aspects that significantly contribute to a fulfilling life.
