Every January, thousands of tech enthusiasts flock to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Showcase (CES), renowned as the most influential tech event globally.
This year, we enlisted Risa Page (66), a volunteer for AARP Nevada and retired high school teacher, to represent Senior Planet at the event. Before Risa delved into exploring the exciting booths at the conference, we sat down with her to discuss the impact of volunteering.
How did you start volunteering for AARP?
I’ve been volunteering with AARP Nevada for three and a half years. When the pandemic hit, I was searching for ways to help, and after taking AARP’s driver safety course, I discovered they were recruiting volunteers.
What other volunteer work do you do?
In 2014, I joined the Traumatic Intervention Program, a unique organization that responds to emergencies to provide support and resources to citizens at the scene. I’ve been with them for 12 years and have been involved in about 900 incidents.
Any advice for finding a good volunteer position?
Listen to your heart and find a cause you care about. There’s always an organization that can use a volunteer’s help. Don’t limit yourself to roles connected to your previous work. Look for a good fit and take things slow at first. If an organization sees your dedication and competence, they’ll want to involve you in more projects.
What does aging with attitude mean to you?
It requires a fearless approach, along with planning and mindfulness of your abilities. Embrace new experiences but also be considerate of your limitations.
