Inspiring Story: Lauren Kingsland, 68
Meet Lauren Kingsland, a celebrated quilter on a mission to elevate quilting to the status of a fine art form and a tool for self-knowledge.
Lauren, who teaches for prestigious programs like the Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities Program and Smithsonian Studio Arts, has also taken her expertise online, organizing a weekly Zoom meet-up of international quilters.
“I knew nothing about Zoom or broadcasting from home, but I was motivated to learn because when the pandemic hit I had to shift all of my major activities to online,” she says.
Through her online quilting group, Lauren has found a newfound appreciation for the connections technology enables. “Everyone in the Zoom quilting group feels that we are so much richer because we have these international friends that we see all the time,” she adds.
Lauren’s decades-long fight to have quilting acknowledged as a fine art form has finally borne fruit. “Now, younger people have no clue that quilts were not considered a proper art medium. Which makes me feel so successful!” she shares.
Lauren’s inspiring journey and her stunning quilts can be seen at The Lab on Santa Fe in Denver, CO through December 2nd.
Senior Planet’s motto “Aging with Attitude” resonates with Lauren, who believes in embracing the wisdom accumulated through age.
