In recent news, researchers have highlighted the significance of blood-brain barrier dysfunction in brain aging. As our bodies age, this specialized layer of cells surrounding blood vessels in the central nervous system weakens, allowing harmful molecules and cells to enter the brain and trigger inflammation. Studies have shown that blood-brain barrier dysfunction is an early contributor to neurodegenerative conditions and cognitive decline.
Research has also shown a strong association between vascular risk factors, blood-brain barrier permeability, and cognitive functioning in aging individuals and those with neurodegenerative diseases. By targeting modifiable vascular risk factors, we may be able to reduce cognitive decline and improve brain health in older adults.
In another study, researchers explored the role of NOX4 activity in macrophage dysfunction in atherosclerosis. Macrophages play a critical role in clearing excess cholesterol from blood vessel walls, and mitochondrial dysfunction in these cells can lead to plaque formation and cardiovascular disease. Targeting NOX4-dependent mitochondrial oxidative stress shows promise in managing atherosclerosis and reducing plaque progression.
