According to the Centers for Disease Control, 57.6% of adults consume nutritional supplements, which have significant environmental impacts. One popular supplement, Omega-3 oils, is responsible for the decline of krill in the Southern Ocean and overfishing of pelagic fish. Orlo Nutrition, an Icelandic company, is growing algae to produce Omega-3 and related supplements, eliminating the need to harvest krill or fish.

Corinna Bellizzi, Head of Sales and Marketing at Orlo Nutrition, is our guest on Sustainability In Your Ear.

We recently spoke with Philippe and Ashlan Cousteau about the environmental impact of Omega-3 oil production. Orlo Nutrition’s production facilities in Iceland use renewable energy and CO2 captured from the sky to feed its algae, resulting in a methylated form of vitamin B12. This sustainable approach to supplement production has the potential to revolutionize the food and nutrition industry and reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based plastics.
