An innovative digital HIV PrEP service has been introduced in East Sussex, offering convenient access to vital tests and preventative medication for HIV without the need to visit a clinic.
Launched on 6 August 2024, this collaborative initiative involves East Sussex County Council, remote diagnostic provider Preventx, not-for-profit organization The Love Tank CIC, and LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor.
This service aims to address existing barriers to HIV PrEP access and missed opportunities for initiation by providing a more equitable approach to preventive care. By promoting wider access to this medicine, it aligns with the government’s target of zero HIV transmissions by 2030.
Dr. Vanessa Apea, Medical Director at Preventx, emphasized the importance of enhancing HIV PrEP accessibility to achieve the goal of eradicating HIV transmissions in England. She highlighted the significance of offering alternative access options to overcome cultural taboos and logistical challenges that may hinder individuals from seeking HIV PrEP.
Individuals interested in utilizing this service will undergo an online assessment followed by a consultation with a healthcare professional. Upon meeting the requirements, they will receive an at-home testing kit for HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Upon confirmation of a negative HIV test result, users will receive a one-month supply of HIV PrEP medication along with renal function testing. Those with normal renal function will be eligible for a six-month prescription.
Users will have the convenience of ordering repeat prescriptions online, which will be delivered to their doorsteps. HIV PrEP, also known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, is recommended by the NHS for individuals engaging in behaviors that increase the risk of HIV transmission.
Director of Public Health for East Sussex, Darrell Gale, expressed enthusiasm for this initiative, stating that making HIV PrEP more accessible will significantly reduce the risk of contracting HIV. By providing online access to HIV PrEP, the service aims to overcome barriers like work commitments, caregiving responsibilities, and stigma associated with in-person healthcare services.
In a similar effort, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust began offering online HIV PrEP medication to eligible residents of specific boroughs in 2023. Noteworthy enhancements to HIV services, including new PrEP functionality, were also introduced by sexual health provider Inform Health in the same year.
