Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Tim Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota, as her running mate after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race recently. Walz’s outspoken remarks on former President Donald Trump and Senator J.D. Vance have garnered attention nationally, shining a spotlight on this progressive figure.

Before achieving national recognition through his cable news appearances and Harris’ endorsement, Walz, a former soldier, football coach, and teacher, was making strides as the governor of Minnesota. Known for his progressive values and ability to build coalitions, Walz leveraged his position to pass significant progressive legislation, such as a law mandating clean energy usage by 2040, propelling Minnesota as a leader in state-level climate action.

Despite his focus on improving lives over securing political gain, Walz maintains a strong approval rating of 55% in his home state. His governance includes bipartisan initiatives for clean energy, reforming energy project permits, clean transportation standards, and funding for clean energy jobs training and infrastructure improvements.

Walz’s reputation as an approachable everyman and effective communicator has shielded him from attacks typically directed at climate-focused politicians. His inclusive approach and track record in Minnesota could greatly benefit Harris as she shapes a legislative agenda that builds on the Biden administration’s work, particularly in climate action.

With states expected to drive much of the climate action in the coming years, Walz’s experience as a governor could prove invaluable in navigating federal-state collaboration to enhance clean energy projects nationwide. As federal incentives for clean energy flow, Walz’s expertise in governance and federal-state dynamics can help streamline and improve cooperation for effective climate initiatives.

In light of the current political landscape and the critical role of states in climate action, Walz’s addition to the Harris ticket highlights the potential for impactful collaboration and progress in addressing environmental challenges on a national scale.
