Samira Sabzian
The tragic story of Samira Sabzian, a child bride from Iran, has come to a shocking end. Married at 15 and later imprisoned at 19 for murdering her abusive husband, she was executed at the age of 29 in the Ghezel Hesar prison in Karaj, as reported by the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) group. Despite being a victim of gender apartheid, child marriage, and domestic violence, she fell victim to the Iranian regime’s unjust laws and was executed by hanging, according to IHR director Mahmood-Amiry Moghaddam.

During her imprisonment, Sabzian suffered further by being denied the opportunity to meet her children, according to Iranian activists who shared her jail cell.
Sabzian’s execution was based on Iran’s sharia murder laws, known as ‘qesas’ (retribution in kind), which do not take domestic violence into consideration. Human rights groups have criticized the laws, noting that the victim’s family can choose the death penalty or request financial compensation. In Sabzian’s case, her husband’s parents opted for the death penalty.
According to IHR, 18 women, including Sabzian, have been executed this year, signaling a surge in executions in Iran with 115 people put to death in November alone. Amnesty International has condemned Iran for its “horrific state-sanctioned killing spree.”
Iran remains a country known for violating human rights, where even social media activity and personal appearance can lead to imprisonment or even death.

Following the 1979 revolution, Islamic sharia law made the hijab mandatory for women in Iran, leading to harassment and legal repercussions for those who do not comply. Notably, Iran has also employed face ID technology to monitor and punish women for non-compliance.
Green Prophet has previously interviewed individuals who have faced consequences for opposing the regime’s crackdown on personal freedoms, highlighting the pervasive human rights violations in Iran.
