Can One Develop a Means to Treat Sarcopenia Derived from Present Osteoporosis Medications?
Osteoporosis and sarcopenia are common conditions among the elderly, both leading to frailty. Some research suggests that osteoporosis treatments could also improve sarcopenia, leading to the concept of “osteosarcopenia”. However, there are currently no effective pharmacological treatments for sarcopenia, and it is unclear whether the outcome of combining osteoporosis medications for sarcopenia treatment would be better than independent efforts to find therapies for sarcopenia. More dedicated research and development programs may be needed to explore this potential treatment pathway. Conflicting results have been observed in studies, but there is evidence suggesting that anti-osteoporotic therapy could offer a feasible program for patients with sarcopenia. Further investigation is needed to determine the effectiveness of utilizing current osteoporosis medications for the treatment of sarcopenia. (Link: https://doi.org/10.1097/MS9.0000000000001352)
