The Voices of Yemen in Israel, a group of Yemenite Jews known for singing Jewish liturgical songs from Yemen, were asked to compose a song for the Houthis before a recent performance. Despite the short notice, they rose to the challenge.
The lyrics of the song express sympathy and a desire for peace:
“Houthis in Yemen, I feel sorrow and mercy for you
We want your songs,
Not your rockets”
Voices of Yemen was founded in 2021 by Ravid Kahalani (Yemen Blues) in collaboration with the Association of Culture, led by Yigal Ben Shalom, with a mission to preserve the mystical songs of the Jewish Tribes of Yemen.
The members of Voices of Yemen wrote and performed the Houthi song in Yemeni Arabic within 2 hours. The clip showcases their first live performance of the song, with a dress rehearsal included at the end of the video.
The members of Voices of Yemen are Yair Tzabari, Aviad Yihye, Ravid Kahalani, and Boaz Gadka. Special thanks were extended to the Houthis and the Yemenite Historical Foundation for their contribution. Production credits go to Karin Kloosterman for the concept, with Green Prophet and the East West House credited for production assistance.
The ball is now in the Houthis’ court.
