It was after the birth of my third child that I discovered the late-night habit of Zillow surfing. I found myself entering a price point slightly higher than what I could afford, exploring distant locations I loved, and scrolling through homes I had no intention of buying. Despite not having any plans to move or work lined up in these fantasy locations, the act of digital escapism served a purpose for me. But why do we engage in activities like Zillow surfing, saving real estate searches, or filling online shopping carts with items we can’t afford? The allure of exploring an alternate reality without any risks is a powerful draw. However, this form of escapism may also trigger negative emotions such as envy or feelings of inadequacy. So why do we continue to indulge in digital escapism? Here’s why: – We seek distraction or relief from the realities of life. – We crave exploration without the fear of consequences. – We may be dissatisfied and seeking a change in our current circumstances. – We give in to cravings when our true desires feel out of reach. While digital escapism can provide temporary relief, it’s important to address the underlying issues driving this behavior. By facing our emotions and seeking to understand their messages, we can work towards creating a life that we don’t feel the need to escape from. Remember, there is another world, but it’s inside this one.
