Wales Sees Second Site Roll Out Electronic Prescription Service
Patients in Conwy are now able to benefit from the new electronic prescription service, becoming the second community in Wales to have access to this convenient and secure way of receiving prescriptions online. Thanks to this system, prescriptions can be sent directly from healthcare providers to the patient’s chosen pharmacy without the need for paper forms.
This new Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) has been successfully implemented at Plas Menai Surgery in Llanfairfechan, with prescriptions being sent to Boots in Llanfairfechan and Gwynan Edwards in Penmaenmawr. This digital approach eliminates the need for clinicians to manually print and sign paper prescriptions, making the process more efficient and reducing unnecessary steps.
Jenny Pugh-Jones, the senior responsible owner of the Primary Care Electronic Prescription Service in Wales, highlighted the numerous benefits of EPS for patients. These include the convenience of collecting prescriptions directly from the pharmacy without having to visit the surgery, as well as improved coordination between the pharmacy and GP practice.
The EPS initiative in Wales is part of the broader Digital Medicines Transformation Portfolio, aiming to digitize prescribing processes across the country. Future plans include integrating EPS with the NHS Wales app, offering patients easier access to healthcare services through their devices.
Pharmacy suppliers involved in the EPS rollout undergo strict testing to ensure safety and compliance with standards. Further implementation phases are scheduled to take place through the summer of 2024, with the aim of optimizing electronic prescribing services for patients across Wales.
