Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow, Scotland
The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, Scotland has recently undergone a significant renovation to its surgery department, starting with the reception, waiting, and corridors areas. The project, led by international design firm Graven, aimed to create a welcoming and uplifting environment for patients and their families.
Prior to the renovation, the reception area was lacking in comfort and visual appeal. Through collaboration with artist Laura Darling, the updated space now features large-scale wall illustrations depicting the hospital’s history and stories shared by former patients, staff, and caregivers. These illustrations provide positive distractions and moments of joy for those visiting the hospital.
Furthermore, the reception area now includes colorful and playful furnishings, along with benches and seating nooks, creating a more inviting and comfortable space. The next phase of the project will focus on renovating the department’s 11 anesthesia rooms, further enhancing the hospital’s overall environment.
