After the addition of a new property and the sale of its skilled nursing portfolio, Sunset Senior Communities is set to continue growing beyond its current four-community count in 2024.
Christina Matzke, Sunset CEO, shared, “It’s been a really busy and exciting time for us.” Matzke, who was named president and CEO in 2021, highlighted the completion of a $30 million renovation to the Waterford Place campus as a significant achievement for the company.
The renovation plan included adding 62 apartments for independent living and a chapel, as well as an additional dining venue for the property. In conjunction with this, the company also transitioned out its skilled nursing footprint and is now focusing on adding additional independent living units and expanding assisted living services for higher acuity residents in their communities.
By forming partnerships with hospice and other health services, Sunset Senior Communities aims to provide end-of-life care without the need for residents to go to a skilled nursing facility. Matzke envisions the provider regaining pre-pandemic census in 2024, with a goal in the mid-90th percentile by mid-year. To achieve this, the company is focusing on marketing efforts and revamping its physical spaces to attract new residents.
In addition, the company has made improvements in staffing, with occupancy levels nearing pre-pandemic levels and a focus on engagement and retention of the workforce. Furthermore, Sunset has revamped its human resources department to attract workers by offering leadership development and higher education tuition reimbursement.
Through innovation and collaboration with regional organizations, Sunset aims to maximize its leverage as a nonprofit senior living provider. The company has also revamped its levels of care platform for residents and is optimistic about the future, with a focus on preparing for younger residents while investing in its staff.
