Tianna Bartoletta (née Madison), a two-time Olympian with three gold medals, had never planned on becoming a mother due to the risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth, especially for Black women. However, after discovering she was pregnant shortly after competing in the 2020 Olympic trials, she and her partner made the difficult decision to proceed with the pregnancy. They prepared for the worst-case scenario by putting together advanced directives and a will. When Tianna was admitted to the hospital, she was already dilated and her baby’s lungs had not fully developed.
