In the senior living industry, more owners and operators are embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) programs, but there is still much progress to be made. According to a recent survey sponsored by the DEIB Coalition, in partnership with Argentum, ASHA, and NIC, there has been a significant increase in the number of senior living companies with DEIB programs. However, the industry must move beyond just recruiting diverse talent. This growth indicates a growing recognition within the industry of the importance and positive impact of promoting DEIB for residents and workers. The survey found that 52% of respondents have implemented a formal DEIB committee responsible for curating DEIB efforts, focusing on aspects of diversity such as gender, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Despite this progress, the industry still faces challenges in fostering belonging and inclusiveness among all, especially for women and people of color who are underrepresented in executive and management positions. It is crucial for organizations to establish a holistic vision for their DEIB efforts and create inclusive work environments to retain diverse talent. While there has been growth in DEIB programs, there is still more work ahead in making senior living communities truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
