My morning routine has been evolving lately, as I have been waking up early at 5:30am due to my recent trip to lead a retreat in London. Despite the shift in my sleep schedule, I have been enjoying this early start to my day.
When asked about my morning routine, I usually say that it varies depending on what I need at the time. However, I realize that I haven’t shared my routine in a while, so here it is. Just keep in mind that this routine is flexible and subject to change based on my needs.
Here’s what I’ve been doing recently:
- Wake and brew some coffee: After going without coffee for about 6 months, I have been treating myself to some delicious coffee brewed with a Chemex brewer.
- Meditate: While I sometimes go without meditating, I have found that my life is much better when I take the time to meditate. It’s like how my dental health benefits from flossing and my physical health from daily exercise.
- Gratitude: I start my day with a moment of gratitude, reflecting on how today is a blessing.
- Prioritize: I plan my day by identifying the tasks that need priority and scheduling when to do them. This moment of quiet and purpose over coffee sets the tone for the day.
- Write: I either write or tackle my most important task next, savoring the quiet moment while enjoying my coffee and gratitude.
- Emails: I dedicate about 30 minutes to clear out as many emails and messages as possible before moving on to the next important task on my list.
While I used to incorporate movement like exercise or yoga in my morning routine, I have been shifting these activities to mid-morning and late afternoons for more intense workouts or runs.
I adjust my morning routine and wake-up time according to the needs of different seasons. Some seasons call for more reflection and stillness, while others require increased focus and activity, and some prioritize mindfulness and movement.
I hope sharing my morning routine inspires you to find beauty and wonder in your own mornings.
