Mom Chooses to Donate Breast Milk After Losing Son at Birth
Sierra Strangfeld, despite facing immense grief and pain at the time of her son’s death, made the selfless decision to donate her breast milk to other children in need. Her son, Samuel, was born with Trisomy 18, a rare chromosomal disorder, and passed away just three hours after birth. Motivated by her daughter’s need for donated breast milk and the knowledge that Samuel would have required it as well, Sierra pumped and preserved her milk for 63 days before donating 500 ounces to the NICU milk bank on Samuel’s due date.
Sierra also kept a portion of her milk to be made into a heart-shaped necklace, honoring her son’s memory. In addition, she and her husband started the “Smiling for Samuel” campaign and set up a scholarship fund in his name. Their hope is to eventually establish the Samuel Strangfeld foundation. Although Samuel’s time on Earth was brief, his impact and purpose continue to live on, bringing comfort and hope to those in need.
