Many people have a negative reaction to the term “elder,” but I never really considered it until a recent heartwarming exchange made me realize I unintentionally assumed the role for at least one young person.
I was seated next to a man in his late 20’s, whom I’ve known his entire life. He’s part of my extended family and he spent considerable time at my home growing up.
As we settled in at a long table for a family celebration, he shared a heartwarming moment with me. He mentioned that he learned important etiquette by observing me during his time at my table, and thanked me for that. His words touched me deeply, as I never intentionally set out to teach him anything, but he was watching and learning nonetheless.
This made me reflect on the privilege of being an elder. We have the opportunity to impart knowledge, encourage, and offer help to those who are eager to learn. After much introspection, I’ve made a commitment to follow a few key elements to becoming the best elder I can be.
Always Be Kind
I will share what I know in a gentle way, teaching without ever criticizing.
Show, Don’t Tell
I will lead by example, aware that young people may be watching and learning from my behavior.
Offer Support When It Matters
Mistakes happen, and I will offer guidance and support to help young individuals navigate their way.
Listen to Understand
I will suspend judgment and try to empathize with their perspective.
It’s Their Journey – Not Mine
While I can offer warnings about potential hardships, I will respect their autonomy to live their own lives.
I now embrace the role of an elder with enthusiasm, feeling a duty to offer what I can to those who may benefit from my experience. Aging is inevitable, but aging with purpose makes it worthwhile. Thus, I’ve decided to mindfully embrace the role of an elder.
