Andrea Hancock is a true advocate for spreading joy, whether it’s through her work as a cabaret style entertainer known as “Seniorita Sunshine,” or leading classes at Senior Planet. As a trainer, Andrea leads the Barre Class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4pm EDT, as well as the Creative Creations class on Tuesdays from 5-6pm EDT.
We had the opportunity to catch up with Andrea and discuss her work, as well as her unique journey of becoming a bat mitzvah at the age of 60.
When asked about her favorite part of being a Senior Planet trainer, Andrea mentioned that she enjoys getting to know her participants and witnessing them form friendships in her classes. She also emphasized the joy of developing her own friendships with all of them.
Andrea also touched on the benefits of the activities she leads, including barre exercises and creative creations. She emphasized that barre is a great way for older adults to improve balance, flexibility, and muscle tone, while also having fun and breaking a sweat. As for creative creations, participants are encouraged to create for the sheer joy of it and often donate their creations to those in need, which brings about a sense of fulfillment and purpose.
Regarding her journey to becoming a bat mitzvah at 60, Andrea described it as a meaningful and transformative experience. She expressed that it wasn’t about reaching a finish line, but rather embracing a new chapter in her life with open arms.
In preparation for the ceremony, Andrea had to write a D’var Torah, which involved making ancient text relevant to modern life. She emphasized the message of never placing arbitrary limits on oneself, and that it’s never too late to take on new challenges and grow as an individual.
Andrea encapsulated the essence of “Aging with Attitude” by emphasizing that she’s not done yet, and she intends to continue learning, growing, and embracing new experiences.
Finally, Andrea shared the magical and meaningful feelings of her special day as a bat mitzvah, expressing deep gratitude for the love and support she felt from her spiritual family.
Andrea Hancock’s journey is a testament to the notion that life is full of opportunities for growth and fulfillment, regardless of age.
