Lupus is A Cruel Disease — But Through Living With it, I’ve Found Balance and Grace
I was in my late twenties, living in New York City, working a demanding but fulfilling job at a large nonprofit organization. I was also deeply committed to physical exercise, maintaining an active social life, and in a serious relationship with my now-husband. Life was busy, but I was happy and thriving.
Then, the symptoms appeared. I was consistently fatigued, experienced a rash on my face, significant joint pain, and hair loss. After a visit to my primary care provider, I was told my vitamin D levels were dangerously low – but my great uncle, a renowned rheumatologist, suspected it was lupus. And he was right.
Being diagnosed with lupus was devastating, and it led to me leaving my dream job due to the impact on my health. However, in my journey of coping and healing, I discovered ways to manage my symptoms and thrive.
I embraced meditation, overhauled my diet, and sought the support of other lupus sufferers. Eventually, I found work at a wellness center, became a certified yoga teacher and health coach, and built a family. Through the experience of living with lupus, I’ve discovered the importance of prioritizing self-care, advocating for my health, and finding grace in the face of this cruel disease.
For anyone experiencing symptoms of lupus, my advice is to seek the care of a rheumatologist immediately. And remember, a life with lupus can still be beautiful, fulfilling, and precious. It requires self-love, support, and advocacy, but it is possible to thrive.
