Lo que debes saber sobre la C. difficile

La C. difficile, también conocida como clostridioides difficile, es una infección bacteriana en el colon causada por la bacteria C. difficile. Sus esporas se encuentran en entornos médicos y no médicos, lo que facilita su introducción en el colon a través de la boca o la piel. Aunque muchas personas tienen C. difficile en su colon sin enfermarse, aquellos con un microbioma intestinal vulnerable o factores de riesgo como el uso de antibióticos, residencia en entornos médicos, sistema inmunológico debilitado o edad avanzada, corren mayor riesgo de desarrollar la infección.

Los síntomas de la C. difficile incluyen diarrea, dolores estomacales, náuseas, vómitos, pérdida de apetito, hinchazón abdominal, fiebre y sangre en las heces. El diagnóstico se realiza a través de pruebas de heces y, en ocasiones, de sangre o de imagenología.

El tratamiento de la C. difficile generalmente involucra el uso de antibióticos como vancomicina, fidaxomicina o metronidazol. Sin embargo, para prevenir recurrencias, la FDA ha aprobado tratamientos basados en microbiomas orales y rectales.

Es importante observar mejoras en los síntomas dentro de los primeros tres a cinco días de tratamiento. Aquellos que experimenten recaídas deben comunicarse con su proveedor de atención médica. Para prevenir la propagación de la infección, es crucial mantener una buena higiene personal y promover una práctica adecuada de desinfección en entornos compartidos.
