Israel is establishing The National Institute for Climate Policy Research at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. This institute will focus on promoting science-based policy solutions to tackle climate change. By translating scientific knowledge into actionable policies, the Institute aims to pioneer evidence-based solutions that ensure sustainability and prosperity at all levels of governance and industry.
The new Institute, headed by former Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg, will empower decision makers at national and local levels, as well as the private sector, fostering impactful climate policies that benefit humanity and society. It will bridge academia, local and national government, and industry by drawing on over 50 years of environmental research conducted at the University.
The Institute will also be part of the new Goldman Sonnenfeldt School of Sustainability and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management. Its mission is to emphasize the climate context of Israel’s renewed development and the region.
Tamar Zandberg, emphasizing the urgency of effective climate policies, stated, “The climate crisis is a challenge that is not going anywhere. It is worse than we thought, and we have already reached the middle of the ‘decisive decade’ in which humanity must change direction. This means that we must act now, but do it in the most appropriate way.”
Zandberg has a proven track record in climate change mitigation and adaptation, leading Israel to unprecedented achievements during her term as environmental protection minister. Under her leadership, Israel adopted a net zero GHG emissions target by 2050 and a climate law for the first time in its history in 2022.
Through Zandberg’s efforts, the government invested billions in climate adaptation, nature-based solutions, and climate technology and innovation. Furthermore, she introduced reforms in environmental education and private-public partnerships to achieve climate goals, thereby advancing Israel’s commitment to combat climate change.
