We recently had a discussion with Maggie Rothwell, host of Senior Planet’s Open Mic, to explore the impact of music and tips for managing performance nerves.
What led you to utilize music as a means of connecting with older adults?
Music has always been an integral part of my life and it comes naturally to me. After transitioning from teaching to nurturing my own children and becoming known as the “guitar lady” at numerous library story times, I felt the pull to return to more mature musical endeavors.
My work in nursing homes allowed me to witness the incredible power of music in connecting with older adults. It was truly astounding to observe the positive effects my music had on their mood, memory, and even blood pressure. While music had always been my calling, this experience revealed its therapeutic potential in serving others.
“The Senior Planet Open Mic is the best because it’s truly OPEN. We accept everyone for who they are and what they bring to the show, because every performer shares a portion of their ‘self’ with the world.”
– Dave, Open Mic Participant
What are some of your favorite parts of hosting the Senior Planet Open Mic?
Hosting the Senior Planet Open Mic has allowed me to meet countless warm and wonderful individuals from all corners of the country. The sheer talent on display is astonishing, and each session features an eclectic mix of music, ensuring that every night is unique. Despite the unpredictability, one can always count on an enthusiastic and supportive audience.
Any tips for dealing with nerves before performing?
Preparation and practice are crucial for managing nerves before a performance. Additionally, selecting a simple song that you feel comfortable with is important. Remember to breathe, stay focused on the music, and most importantly, have fun!
