Kim Scharf was inspired to write her book, Piper Joy and the Grand Old Tree, after her granddaughter Evan went to the emergency room for a two-month stay due to complications from a rare mitochondrial disease. This disease caused a host of challenges for Evan, but her infectious joy and unique spirit inspired Kim to create a children’s book in her honor. Evan’s story serves as a reminder to never take anything for granted, and a portion of the book’s proceeds will go towards mitochondrial disease research non-profit organizations. This heartfelt tribute to Evan’s legacy is a way to share her spirit with the world and celebrate her indomitable joy.
