Research has shown that the protein HKDC1 plays a crucial role in the maintenance of mitochondria and lysosomal function, which is important for preventing cellular aging. HKDC1 is a direct target of the protein TFEB, and it becomes upregulated under conditions of mitochondrial or lysosomal stress. Additionally, HKDC1 is essential for PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy and for the process of lysosomal repair. These findings provide valuable insights into potential therapeutic targets for enhancing mitophagy and combating aging-related decline in mitochondrial function.
