Iran and the Hezbollah terror group, led by Mohammad Ali Merhi, were identified as the entities behind an attempted cyber attack on an Israeli hospital in November. The attack targeted the Ziv Medical Center and was orchestrated by Iran and a Hezbollah cyber group in an effort to disrupt the hospital’s operations. Although the attack was unsuccessful, the cyber criminals did manage to publish patient data online, according to a press release sent to Green Prophet.
An investigation by Israel’s National Cyber Directorate, the IDF, and the Israeli Security Agency revealed that the attack was carried out by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence, with the involvement of Hezbollah’s cyber unit. The thwarted attack occurred approximately three weeks ago.
While the attack was prevented from disrupting hospital operations and impacting medical treatment, the attackers were able to steal sensitive data stored in the hospital’s systems. In a joint effort with the State Prosecutor’s office to protect patient privacy, channels containing sensitive data were promptly removed, as reported by the Israel National Cyber Directorate.
