Ground flaxseed has been shown to help reduce elevated levels of pro-inflammatory, aging-associated oxylipins. In a study on the antihypertensive effects of flaxseed, researchers found a significant drop in high blood pressure among participants consuming ground flaxseed compared to a placebo group. This promising finding offers a dietary alternative to medication for managing hypertension, which is a major risk factor for death globally. Flaxseeds are cost-effective and offer additional health benefits beyond blood pressure reduction.

While some studies have not shown significant blood pressure-lowering effects with flaxseed, overall research suggests a positive impact on systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The combination of components in flaxseed, such as ALA, lignans, fiber, and peptides, contribute to its potential in lowering blood pressure. One key mechanism identified is the inhibition of pro-inflammatory oxylipins, which are linked to aging and cardiovascular disease. By inhibiting the enzyme responsible for producing these oxylipins, flaxseed consumption may help reduce blood pressure and counteract inflammation associated with aging.

Interestingly, a study found that older adults consuming flaxseed experienced a normalization of their pro-inflammatory oxylipin levels, comparable to younger individuals. This highlights the potential of dietary interventions like flaxseed in reducing inflammation and addressing age-related health issues. Incorporating flaxseed into the diet may offer benefits beyond blood pressure management, such as supporting overall health and wellness. In conclusion, flaxseed shows promise in fighting inflammation and promoting cardiovascular health through its unique nutritional profile.
