Failing Mitochondrial Quality Control in Aging and Neurodegeneration – Fight Aging!
Mitochondria, the descendants of ancient symbiotic bacteria integrated into our biochemistry, play a crucial role in cellular functions. As we age, mitochondrial function declines, contributing to age-related conditions. Efforts to improve mitochondrial function in old age are underway, including partial reprogramming and developing infrastructure for mitochondrial transplantation.
One important mechanism for maintaining mitochondrial health is the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (mtUPR), which is activated in response to stress within mitochondria. In disease contexts, modulation of mtUPR holds therapeutic potential in mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction, especially in neurodegenerative diseases. Research has shown that targeting mtUPR could help reduce neurodegeneration and associated symptoms in various models, making it a promising therapeutic target.
