Microdosing is a practice that involves taking small amounts of psychedelic substances to potentially improve mental well-being without experiencing intense effects. This concept is similar to the scene in “Alice in Wonderland” where Alice nibbles on a mushroom to control her size. Recent data shows a growing interest in microdosing, particularly with magic mushrooms containing psilocybin. Despite decriminalization in some areas, it’s crucial to be cautious due to the lack of federal regulation, potentially leading to unsafe products. To learn more about microdosing and magic mushrooms, we spoke with Jim Grigsby, Ph.D., from the University of Colorado Denver Center for Psychedelic Research.
What is microdosing?
Microdosing involves consuming small amounts of psychoactive substances to enhance mood without the intense effects.
“Microdosing does not produce a psychedelic experience as it uses minimal amounts of the substance,” explains Grigsby. Some users may experience a slight buzz if they inadvertently take a slightly higher dose.
When microdosing with mushrooms, individuals typically consume 5% to 10% of a full hallucinogenic dose, often on a regular basis like two or three days a week.
