A recent study conducted by Mass General Brigham suggests that daily use of a multivitamin could have a positive impact on episodic memory. The Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS) aimed to analyze the effects of cocoa extract and multivitamins on heart disease, stroke, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.
According to First Author Chirag Vyasinstructor, a daily multivitamin supplement has the potential to slow cognitive aging, making it an accessible approach to address cognitive decline in older adults. The study involved 573 participants and found that daily multivitamin use showed a “modest benefit” compared to a placebo over a period of two years. The findings also indicated improvements in both global cognition and episodic memory, with no impact on executive function or attention.
Dr. Olivia Okereke, senior author of the report, highlighted the significance of these findings in supporting better cognitive aging, particularly as the population at risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease is projected to increase by 2060.
