Consuming excessive amounts of candy is known to be detrimental to health. It can lead to dental issues, blood sugar problems, and weight gain. However, some types of candy have more severe consequences than others.

Man Dies from Licorice Habit

A construction worker from Massachusetts who ate about a bag-and-a-half of black licorice daily died suddenly from a heart attack. Doctors attributed his licorice habit as the cause. This was due to licorice containing glycyrrhizic acid, which in large amounts can lead to hypertension, metabolic alkalosis, fatal arrhythmias, and renal failure. It can also cause dangerously low potassium levels in the blood.

Licorice in Medicine

Licorice has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine for thousands of years. It has been used to treat a variety of illnesses, though there is a lack of scientific evidence to support all its uses.

Side Effects of Licorice

While licorice may have some beneficial uses, it should also be consumed with caution due to potential side effects, particularly when taken in the form of an extract. It may lead to various health issues and may interfere with certain medications.

Is Licorice Safe to Eat?

Consuming black licorice as an occasional treat is generally safe. However, it’s important to note that consuming large amounts of black licorice at one time, especially for those over 40, can be harmful. There are also licorice root supplements available without glycyrrhizin, making them safer to consume.

The FDA recommends caution when consuming black licorice, advising individuals to contact a healthcare provider if they experience any irregular heart rhythms or muscle weakness after consumption.
