The Best Wellness Design of 2023:
Public-Private Partnership Combines Primary Care, Healthy Living
The Broad Ripple Park Family Center is a community center located in the heart of the Broad Ripple district in Indianapolis. This 40,000 square-foot facility is designed to improve the lives of residents through education, healthy living, and wellness activities for people of all ages. The project has been honored with the Best Wellness Design award for the 2023 Senior Housing News Architecture and Design Awards.
The Concept
The facility was created through a partnership between Avenue Development and Community Health Network, with the goal of promoting intergenerational connections, healthy aging, and lifestyle improvement. The design incorporates spaces for both active and passive recreation, engaging with the surrounding landscape to bring nature indoors and improve the wellness of the community.
The Construction
The $19.7 million project faced challenges related to supply chain disruptions but was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The community center includes a full-size court gymnasium, indoor track, multipurpose rooms, medical offices, and a variety of recreation and wellness spaces overseen by Indy Parks and Recreation.
The Completion
Since opening, the center has been welcoming hundreds of visitors every day, offering a wide range of recreation activities for all ages. The facility has become a hub for healthy living and serves as a model for creating similar spaces of wellness in other cities across the Midwest and beyond.
