The transition to electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will necessitate advancements in battery technology, charging infrastructure, and the electric grid. Sam Abuelsamid, Principal Analyst for E-Mobility at Guidehouse Insights, shares insights on the challenges and opportunities related to electrification. From battery technology and mobility to smart cities, EV range anxiety, charging networks, and the evolving distributed energy grid, Sam explores the complexities of the electric vehicle landscape. He also emphasizes the importance of recycling for sustainable battery production. Guidehouse recently published a report titled Developing Solutions for Recycling End-of-Life EV Batteries. During the discussion, Sam also reveals the type of car he would consider buying this year.

In 2022, electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for 14% of global new car sales, with an expected increase to 18.9% in 2023 according to the International Energy Agency. China leads the way with more than half of global EV sales, while the United States saw 7.2% of car sales in the first quarter of 2023 attributed to EVs, and plug-in hybrids comprising 13% of sales. This means that about 20% of all cars sold will require advanced battery technology. As discussed in previous interviews, the battery supply chain is still maturing, and there remains a shortage of critical minerals such as lithium.
