What drives your interest in sustainability?

“Sustainability encourages economic growth in addition to mitigating climate change effects,” says Iler. His interests were sparked by reading “Building the New American Economy” by Columbia professor Jeffrey Sachs.

Can you give us a quick overview of your educational background and work experience?

Iler’s journey, from volunteering on political campaigns and interning on Capitol Hill to working with large-scale conservation projects, has been instrumental in shaping his career.

What made you choose the MPA-ESP program at Columbia?

“MPA-ESP’s focus on communicating complex topics in simple terms, without losing the nuance, is such a valuable skill,” says Iler.

Where would you like to see your career take you?

Patrick Iler aims to have a positive impact on the world through conservation and endangered species protection. His future plans include attending law school and broadening his understanding of contract law and public-private partnerships.

Do you have a favorite memory of the program?

Highlights for Iler include trivia at Amity Hall, after-exam drinks at Arts & Crafts Beer Parlor near campus, and the World Leaders Forum at Low Library.

What advice do you have for current students?

Iler emphasizes the importance of being open to all opportunities and enjoying the program, as it goes by very fast.
