As narrated to Erica Rimlinger
Upon waking from anesthesia-induced slumber, my mother’s voice sounded distant as she broke the news – “The doctor couldn’t proceed with the operation, there was too much cancer.”
My next recollection was of a compassionate chaplain entering my hospital room. Her calming presence eased my fears as I disclosed my apprehensions about the unknown. She firmly stated, “I’m not leaving until you schedule an appointment with an oncologist.”
An urgent determination surged through my groggy mind. With six children depending on me, one with autism and Down syndrome, I knew I had no choice but to fight. Neglecting my health and busy schedule had taken a toll leading to my stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis.
Reflecting on missed opportunities to prioritize my health earlier, I vowed to share a crucial message with my younger self – advocate for your well-being, speak up, and make time for essential screenings. Despite past reservations, I embarked on aggressive chemotherapy and embraced holistic practices like meditation, yoga, and gratitude journaling.
Despite enduring challenging chemo side effects, I felt stronger than ever. Education on genetics and treatment options, along with specialized surgical consultations, gave me hope for a longer life. My top priority is being present for my children’s milestones and growth.
In striving for a balanced life, prioritizing mental and physical health, and cherishing each moment, I’ve embraced the invaluable lesson of putting my health first, no matter the circumstances.
