Abbott Northwestern Hospital Surgical and Critical Care Facility, Minneapolis
The new surgical and critical care facility at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis is a key part of a 10-year campus improvement plan. With 192 new beds, 30 operating rooms, and 22 interventional suites, the 500,000-square-foot construction project will reshape the hospital’s campus and enhance essential services. Designed by HGA and constructed by Mortenson, the facility is expected to be completed in 2026.
Site Planning and Design
The new facility will include a redesigned Founder’s Mall, opening up the complex to the surrounding community. The use of red, unglazed terracotta in the façade will tie in with the existing red-brick buildings on campus, preserving Abbott Northwestern’s history while bringing a contemporary aesthetic. Additional features include a rooftop healing garden, a glass-enclosed skyway, and increased parking to accommodate staff and patients.
Healthy Materials and Calming Interior Design
With a focus on health and flexibility, the interior of the facility will feature PVC-free finishes, sustainable flooring, and a warm, timeless palette. The design will also incorporate wayfinding elements and support the organization’s branding. New access roads, underground infrastructure, and a public art installation are also planned to improve emergency department access and welcome patients and families.
