Research shows that the mortality characteristics of type 2 diabetes closely resemble an accelerated form of normal aging. This metabolic disease, often caused by excess fat tissue, leads to chronic inflammation, high blood sugar, and other disruptive effects. Interestingly, being overweight is likened to accelerated aging due to the increased burden of senescent cells. The good news is that type 2 diabetes is reversible, even in its advanced stages, through sustained low-calorie diets and weight loss. Studies have even used animal models of type 2 diabetes as a proxy for aging. A recent epidemiological study in Germany analyzed diabetes mortality using the Gompertz law, which suggests that mortality rates increase exponentially with age. Understanding this association can provide valuable insights into managing diabetes-related mortality and potentially reversing its effects.
