Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has successfully restored its blood transfusion IT systems following the cyber attack on Synnovis.
After the ransomware attack in June 2024, NHS Blood and Transplant urgently appealed for donations of O Positive and O Negative blood to replenish stocks in south east London.
The restoration of the IT systems means that the trust can now issue all blood group products for transfusions, ending the reliance on O type blood for surgeries.
This achievement was attributed to the hard work of colleagues at the trust and Synnovis, who worked tirelessly to overcome the impact of the cyber attack.
Efforts are also being made to fully restore blood transfusion services in the area in the coming weeks, following disruptions caused by the attack.
Experts have highlighted the importance of cybersecurity measures such as two-factor authentication to prevent similar attacks in the future. Legislation is also in the works to bolster cyber security and resilience against such incidents.
