Eskaton is in the midst of a significant transformation, shifting its focus from a higher-acuity operator to one centered on lifestyle, wellness, and person-centered care. Spearheading this change is CEO Sheri Peifer, who has been leading the organization since being promoted in late 2023.

One key aspect of Eskaton’s transformation is their revamped staffing model, aimed at improving employee retention through enhanced training and career development opportunities. The organization’s Eskaton Academy training program has been instrumental in reducing turnover since its implementation a year ago.

The new staffing model aligns closely with Eskaton’s strategic repositioning, moving towards a holistic social wellness and hospitality model. This cultural transformation is infused in all aspects of Eskaton’s operations, driving the shift towards a more person-centered approach.

With 25 communities in California, Eskaton is actively working on enhancing employee training, utilizing innovative methods such as role-playing with artificial intelligence and hybrid learning opportunities. The organization’s commitment to employee development has resulted in an impressive 80% retention rate for participants in the new model.

Training makes the difference

Investing in employee training and development is crucial for the future success of senior living operators, and Eskaton has been proactive in this regard. Their Eskaton Academy training program, funded by a grant from the California Department of Aging, includes new modules tailored for employees, leadership development, and required caregiver training.

Peifer emphasized the importance of providing career paths and empowerment to employees, ensuring they are partners in care delivery. The success of the program has led Eskaton to independently invest in it once the grant funding ends in September.

‘Five pillars’ defining Eskaton’s future

Looking ahead, Eskaton’s future is built on five key pillars: culture development, campus modernization, expansion, partnerships, and impact on resident care. The organization is focused on modernizing campuses, building new partnerships, and enhancing resident engagement through innovative services.

As Eskaton prepares for the future, Peifer envisions a shift towards more independent living options and a hub-and-spoke model for residential senior living. This intense period of growth and transformation signifies Eskaton’s commitment to providing exceptional care and services to older adults in California.
