After a remarkable 64-year career, singing icon Tony Orlando is preparing to end his touring days as he approaches his 80th birthday. From skyrocketing to stardom at just 16 with hits like Bless You and Halfway to Paradise to collaborating with vocalists in the group Dawn for chart-toppers like Knock Three Times, Tie a Yellow Ribbon, and Candida, Tony shares his extraordinary journey with SENIOR PLANET.
Q: This farewell tour marks the end of an era for you. What led to this decision to hang up touring?
TONY: After 64 years of giving it my all, I feel it’s time to step back from the constant grind of being on the road. Touring nowadays involves a lot of logistical challenges – the travel, expenses, airport headaches. The shows themselves are enjoyable, but the rest of the process has become taxing. So, I’m not saying goodbye to show business altogether, just hitting pause on touring.
Q: What’s next for you?
TONY: My brother David and I have crafted a Broadway show with Grammy winner Michael Omartian, which we’re eager to bring to audiences. I’ve also delved into screenwriting and plan to tackle another book. Additionally, I’m keen on venturing into motivational speaking and continuing to perform for the veterans whom I’ve supported for over five decades. So, this is really a shift from touring, not from my passion for entertainment.
Q: As your 80th birthday nears, how do you plan to celebrate?
TONY: I prefer to keep it low-key and cherish the moment in solitude. I’ve never been one for elaborate birthday celebrations; the spotlight isn’t my cup of tea. Age is just a number to me, so I don’t feel anxious about turning 80.
Q: Your wife, Francine, seems to be a pillar of support. How has she influenced your decision-making?
TONY: Francine is incredibly understanding and has been my rock for 33 years since we tied the knot, having known her for half a century. She backs me in all my endeavors, demonstrating unwavering support no matter the path I choose.
Q: Reflecting on your enduring marriage, what’s the key to such a lasting, happy relationship?
TONY: Marriage requires effort and understanding from both parties. It’s a lifelong commitment that demands open communication and a willingness to resolve conflicts before they escalate. Apologizing before bedtime after a disagreement is crucial to sustaining a harmonious bond.
Q: How do you maintain your health and fitness for the demands of touring?
TONY: I’ve struggled with weight fluctuations over the years and currently rely on Ozempic to manage my borderline diabetic condition. With this prescription, I can curb my cravings and make healthier choices. Cutting down on carbs and steering clear of sugar are crucial factors in managing my weight effectively.
Q: Do you follow a particular exercise routine?
TONY: I’m not a fan of traditional exercise or gym sessions, but my high-energy performances on stage serve as my calorie-burning workout. Engaging with the audience and delivering an electrifying show helps me stay active and maintain my stamina.
Q: What fond memories do you have of your iconic friendships in the entertainment industry?
TONY: My encounters with legends like Elvis, Frankie Valli, and Barry Manilow hold a special place in my heart. Elvis and I shared moments backstage at the Las Vegas Hilton, where we swapped stories and enjoyed each other’s company. The shared history in places like the Hilton evokes nostalgia and gratitude for enduring friendships.
Q: How did your multicultural upbringing shape your musical journey?
TONY: Growing up in a household filled with music, thanks to my grandfather and mother’s musical backgrounds, instilled in me a deep love for harmonies and melodies. The influence of iconic performers like Gene Kelly sparked my early passion for show business and paved the way for my career in music. My diverse heritage from Hell’s Kitchen provided a rich tapestry of inspirations that fueled my artistic pursuits.
Q: With a plethora of hits under your belt, do you have a favorite song?
TONY: Each hit song holds a special place in my heart, as they represent different chapters in my career. However, Bless You and Halfway to Paradise resonate deeply as they marked the beginning of my musical journey at a young age. Candida, the debut hit with Dawn, also remains a cherished memory in my repertoire of musical achievements.
