Many senior living operators are increasing revenue and covering expenses by charging residents for additional services such as cable, internet, meals, and pet care. A recent survey by Bild and Co. of over 250 communities revealed that trash services, pet fees, laundry, extra meals, and other services are commonly charged for. Trash services cost between $60 and $80 per month, while cable, phone, and Wi-Fi range from $20 to $35. Pet fees typically start at $600 with a $25 monthly charge. Rent and service costs have increased in 2024 compared to 2023, reflecting a slow recovery from the impacts of Covid-19. The average monthly cost for assisted living was $2,201, and memory care was $3,534. Around 41% of memory care communities were all-inclusive, with additional charges for some residents. Independent living was not offered in 55% of communities surveyed, and almost 70% of those offering independent living did not include care services in the base rent. Care costs varied based on the level of assistance required, with prices ranging from $450 to $4,400 on average.
