Why Senior Living Operators Must Do More to Win Over LGBTQ Older Adults

Senior living operators have a unique opportunity and a social responsibility to provide the lifestyle and healthcare options that gay and trans older adults desire. The LGBTQ demographic among older adults is growing rapidly, with up to 7 million individuals over the age of 50 projected to be living in the U.S. by 2030. However, many in this group lack support from caregivers, leading to healthcare disparities.

It is crucial for senior living providers to update their care, lifestyle, and wellness offerings to meet the needs of this expanding demographic. While progress has been made in LGBTQ inclusion, there is still much work to be done. Operators must go beyond basic affirmation and truly understand the unique experiences and challenges faced by gay and trans older adults.

Creating inclusive and welcoming environments involves more than just policies; operators must actively combat stigmatization, isolation, and lack of identity-affirming care. Simple steps, such as using correct pronouns and engaging with residents to learn about their needs and interests, can make a significant difference in fostering a sense of safety and belonging.

By investing in training, organizing events with LGBTQ support organizations, and engaging in community conversations, senior living operators can demonstrate their commitment to supporting LGBTQ residents. Building meaningful relationships and creating inclusive spaces through events and celebrations that embrace diverse identities and backgrounds are essential steps in attracting and housing LGBTQ older adults.

It is time for senior living operators to do more than just pay lip service to LGBTQ inclusion; they must actively work to create environments that respect and celebrate the diversity of all individuals.
