From age 12 to 30, I was deeply involved in competitive running, reaching my peak when I was running 65 miles per week with the goal of breaking three hours in the marathon. Unfortunately, a traumatic event forced me to stop running altogether. This sudden stop in my routine left me feeling lost as running had become an integral part of my identity, daily routine, and career. It was a devastating loss that I grieved like the death of a loved one.
After years of not being able to run, I decided to give it another try last summer after an unexpected encounter with a treadmill. I discovered that running now was painful, my mobility was limited due to my injuries, and I couldn’t run as fast as I used to, but I could still run. This realization led me to participate in the runDisney event at Walt Disney World in Orlando in January 2024.
runDisney races are known for their inclusivity, welcoming runners of all levels, from beginners to experienced marathoners. The races are held at various Disney parks throughout the year, making it convenient to find one that fits your schedule. Even if you can’t attend in person, many races offer a virtual option for participants. The Walt Disney Marathon weekend in January is a highlight on the runDisney calendar, offering various race options including a 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon.
While I initially aimed to participate in the Dopey Challenge, I realized it was beyond my current capabilities and decided to focus on the 5K, 10K, and half marathon. The generous cut-off times at runDisney races allow walkers to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed. The races are well-organized with starting corrals based on ability, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable race day.
The community atmosphere at runDisney races is special, with participants often dressed in Disney-themed costumes and the opportunity to interact with iconic characters throughout the course. The energy and excitement of fellow runners can be a source of motivation and joy, making the race experience truly unique.
Preparing for a Disney race involves standard training protocols, but with special consideration if you plan to do multiple events or take on a challenge like the Dopey Challenge. The support and camaraderie at runDisney races make them a memorable and inclusive event for runners of all backgrounds and abilities.
