Even though nearly half of the population experiences menstruation for a significant portion of their lives, periods remain a widely misunderstood topic. This lack of understanding is largely due to inadequate research and education about the female body. At Intimina, we aim to change this misconceptions, one question at a time.

Let’s delve into the intricacies of reproductive health, starting with a common question – what exactly is expelled from the body during menstruation? Menstruation 101, Menstruation, also known as having your period, involves the shedding of blood and tissues from the uterus, which exits the body through the vagina. This process is a crucial part of the menstrual cycle, which spans the entire month and includes various phases.

The menstrual cycle begins with the menses phase, where the period starts and lasts for three to five days. The follicular phase occurs simultaneously with the menses phase and ends at ovulation. Ovulation typically happens around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, when an egg is released from the ovary. After ovulation, the luteal phase begins, with increased progesterone levels thickening the uterine lining in preparation for a potential pregnancy. If fertilization doesn’t occur, hormone levels drop, triggering the menstrual cycle again.

During menstruation, the main components of period blood are blood itself, endometrial lining, bacteria, and secretions from the vagina and cervix. Normal period blood can vary in color from deep red to brown, with small clots being common. It’s essential to watch for any abnormal signs, such as large or frequent clots, unusual colors like gray or orange, or persistent pink or light red blood, as these could indicate hormonal imbalances or more serious issues.

Keeping track of these factors helps you understand what’s normal for your body and when to consult a healthcare provider. Period cups, like the Lily Cup One or Ziggy Cup 2, are excellent options for managing menstruation and monitoring your blood. Being aware of your body’s signals and choosing the right period products can lead to a more comfortable period experience.
